HomeBuilder Grant - an accessible opportunity

HomeBuilder Stimulus Package

an opportunity for thoughtful construction

There is no doubt the Federal Government's new HomeBuilder package is going to widely benefit North Queensland's construction industry in the recovery from COVID-19.

But more than that, Martin Locke Homes believes it's also an opportunity to greatly benefit the wider community and future generations by ensuring the new homes are designed and built with accessibility and inclusiveness in mind.

"We're advocating that individuals and builders taking advantage of the stimulus package strongly consider designing and building to a minimum standard of accessibility," Director Martin Locke said.

"It's evident, the homes we are building now should cater for our community's needs in the future.

"As new home builders we must adapt to address the growth for our aging population as well those with specific accessibility needs. The old, or traditional way of building just doesn't do that.

"In our experience, the value of independence gained by an individual with a physical impairment living in a home which has no steps (or lips), wider halls and doors, larger step-free showers and the ability to install grab rails without major renovation can be priceless.

"Yet there is a tangible value gained by the home owner as well, in that, for a relatively small investment upon construction, their home has a point-of-difference in the market should they choose to sell or rent some time down the track.

"There is no doubt that homes that have incorporated accessible features at the design stage will be in higher demand into the future. These homes will meet the needs of every person regardless of their age or ability and feel more spacious and safer to life in."

Accessible design features:

  • Step-free access from the street, into the front door and throughout the home
  • No-step transition from inside out to the alfresco area
  • Large, step-free showers
  • Wider hallway and doors

Multigenerational design and construction

Another growing trend in residential construction is multigenerational living. As the name suggests, that is when multiple generations live under the same roof.

Our multigenerational designs include our accessible living features above and offer those families living together all the benefits of multi-gen living as well as ensuring privacy and independence for all of those in the home.

Since opening our Multigenerational Family 310 display home at Elliot Springs we've experienced a dramatic rise in Townsville home builders considering this type of home for financial, family and health reasons among others.
