Accessible Housing
Cootharinga North Queensland
It was the first, fully-accessible project Martin undertook for Cootharinga North Queensland back in 2008 while building under Ramlock Properties. Designed by experienced Architect Ken Tippet, the project was so highly regarded, it took out HIA’s North Qld Regional award for Special Purpose Housing of the Year.
The response of overwhelming joy and emotions from all involved, in particular the parents and their adult children who were going into care for the first time, opened Martin’s eyes to the massive difference a well-designed and purpose-built ‘home’ with accessible features can make to a person’s life.
The 450m2 plus home was designed and built to the highest level of accessibility, and consists of 5 bedrooms, all fully-ensuited with their own small lounge and outdoor terrace as well as common kitchen, dining and living areas and fully-contained carers’ quarters on site.
The project was delivered well under schedule, and in fact, was the first project completed Nationally from that round of funding by the Federal Government.
It was just the beginning of what has now become Martin Locke Homes’ area of expertise and passion – creating ‘Built For Life’ homes for those in our community whose lives can be changed by a well-designed and built home which perfectly suits their needs.
