MLH to help shape inclusive home design nationally

North Queensland's leader in inclusive design & construction

29 January 2019

Martin Locke Homes (MLH) has built our reputation as North Queensland’s leader in inclusive home design and construction, now we're calling on that experience to help build Australia-wide industry knowledge and participation through a collaboration with residential home design group Arei.

Arei Director & Designer Ben Dye

Arei was formed in 2017 when award-winning design duo Benjamin Dye and Natasha McLean decided to use their 30-years of combined experience to create a catalogue of high-quality designs for builders to call upon.

It’s grown into a membership of independent builders across the country with a renewed focus on providing accessible home designs in line with the Livable Housing Australia Guidelines (LHAG).

Arei Designer and Director Ben Dye said all new plans added to its catalogue would now meet at least the Silver LHAG Level with key requirements including step-free entry and throughout the home, plus wider doors and halls.

“We have been wanting to create a ‘Livable Housing Range’ and when we first spoke to Martin he brought it up straight away, I’ve never met a builder that’s more passionate about it,” Ben said.

“Their passion for building accessible homes matches our passion to design them.

“We currently have around 18 Silver, Gold & Platinum Level designs and we’re looking forward to expanding that catalogue to offer our builders and their clients a wide variety of designs in multiple housing styles.

“Because we’re designing and not building the homes, Martin and his team will be a great resource for us as well because they have the construction knowledge and experience that will be important to creating designs that work both on paper and on site.”

MLH Director Martin Locke said it was a logical move to become Arei’s Townsville Region representative.

“This is a great opportunity to collaborate with Arei and other builders around the country to generate greater momentum around building inclusive, accessible homes that will better cater for the needs of our population in years to come,” Mr Locke said.

“Since joining Arei I’ve already received calls from fellow builders reaching out to talk about what we have been doing in the inclusive home space and how that might apply to them.

“We have been designing and building our homes locally to the Silver Level of the LHAG for a number of years and our clients say the step-free, spacious designs create great flow in their homes. Not only that, they cater for all ages and abilities, from babies in prams or somebody on crutches due to injury, through to an elderly person in need of a walking frame or a person who requires a wheelchair.

“It’s great our clients will now also have access to Arei’s catalogue of designs to consider during their design phase.”

Martin Locke Homes has also been at the forefront of a campaign to see Townsville become a pilot city where all new homes are built to the Silver Level standard.
