Martin Locke Homes (MLH) believes the ‘laid back’ lifestyle on offer in Townsville is acting as a major draw card to attract interstate families, and even fellow Queenslanders to settle down here.
The leading Custom Home Builder has experienced an influx in clients relocating their families to Townsville, with up to five recent ‘lifestyle change’ builds in Eden Park Estate alone.
Two of those recently-completed builds, were not only both in the same street, but both for families relocating to Townsville from Sydney, an occurrence not experienced in the company’s eight-year history.

“It’s an interesting situation to be building for two families at the same time, in the same estate, in the same street, with the same idea of completing a lifestyle change from Sydney to Townsville,” Mr Locke said.
“Such was the commitment and level of trust between our team and both families, that we were able to complete the majority of their designs, colour choices and constructions while the clients still lived interstate.
“We’re currently building another home just around the corner for a couple that has relocated from Brisbane as well, we have just handed over the keys to a couple that relocated from Mackay, and we have recently signed a new client moving from Ingham too – all in Eden Park Estate.”
New Townsville Resident and MLH Client Trudi Slater grew up in the North and knew someday she would bring her own family ‘home’ to experience the relaxed lifestyle.
She said she wasn’t surprised more southern-based families were making the move north, but the trend had hit close to home.
“Many families in other states are looking for a better lifestyle for their families and North Queensland offers that, I guess the surprise came when they happened to live in the same street and chose the same builder,” she said.
“We didn’t see our new home in the flesh until the house was at lock up stage but the MLH team was extremely professional and understanding of the situation and definitely put our minds at ease.
“Our move has allowed our family the time together that we so wanted. Townsville provides all the events you could imagine, great schools and let’s face it no traffic and long commutes to work, I have so much more time on my hands - everywhere in Townsville takes no more than 15 minutes to get to.”
The Hope family shared a similar goal to find a more relaxed, slower-paced lifestyle for their family to enjoy, as well as a new custom home that would cater for their needs well into the future, which happens to be just down the road from the Slaters.
The Hopes lived interstate for the full duration of their build and Teresa even attended handover day via a facetime call. They will move in permanently just in time to spend their first Christmas in Townsville.
“For us the timing was right with the ages of our children and where they are at school and also for where we are in our careers, and it was really the change of pace and lifestyle that attracted us to Townsville,” Mrs Hope said.
“It’s just beautiful up here and we now have a house that will function for us going forward. Because MLH builds their homes to cater for generational change, whether it’s older parents that live with us one day or it’s just us becoming old and needing to get around easier, we know this home will allow for what life brings.
“We felt at ease from the first time we met Martin & his team, it just felt right, it was an instant relationship where you are comfortable with them, you can trust them and you only need to see their display homes to know they do beautiful work.”
